Is the catheter thick or thin good? How to choose the right catheter?

A catheter, usually made of natural rubber, silicone rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is a tube that is inserted from the urethra into the bladder to drain urine.

According to the different shapes and materials, catheters can be roughly divided into five categories, namely disposable non-indignant catheters, bacterial catheters, pointed catheters, metal catheters and balloon catheters, which can meet the needs of patients with different symptoms. Balloon catheters are generally used in clinical practice.

The types of catheters are mainly divided into three types, including single catheter, double catheter and triple catheter. The double catheter is mainly 8Fr, 10Fr, 12Fr, 14Fr, 16Fr, 18Fr, 20Fr, 22Fr and 24Fr, while the triple catheter is mainly 14Fr, 16Fr, 18Fr, 20Fr and 22Fr. 24 fr.

The normal urinary tract is 0.5cm in diameter and has three narrow sites: the junction of the kidney and ureter, the peri-iliac crest and the junction of the bladder. The stenosis is 0.2cm in diameter, and the ureter is usually only 1 — 3mm, with a total length of 20 — 30cm.

Too thick or too thin a catheter is not good. If too thin, it is easy to clog. If it’s too thick, it can irritate the urethra and cause inflammation.

Therefore, you should choose the right catheter for you. Because each person’s ureter is of a different size, different types of catheters are produced. Therefore, children usually have a fine catheter for children and adults have an adult catheter.

When using the catheter, the appropriate catheter should be selected according to the model. Professional medical personnel should perform aseptic operation to avoid urinary tract infection of patients as far as possible.
