Can one – time catheter pull out by itself?

Disposable catheters can’t be pulled out by themselves!

Because the catheter must be pulled out under the premise of complete sterility, and indwelling catheter is usually equipped with anti-fall air bag, and anastomotic stenosis, in case of improper operation of self catheter extraction, easy to lead to urethral injury and even bladder infection. Recommended to regular hospital urology department for diagnosis and removal of the catheter.

Correct methods and procedures for removing a catheter
1. The medical staff informed the patient to pull out the catheter, put the patient in the supine position, breathe deeply to relax the tension, and try to cooperate with the medical staff;

2. Put on disposable gloves, take off the patient’s pants, and disinfect the outer urethra with betadine cotton swab first.

3. Then use a syringe to pull out the liquid in the catheter balloon. The liquid in the balloon is about 10-15ml normal saline.

4. Inform the patient that there may be a little pain, let the patient take a deep breath, relax and prepare psychologically, take the gauze, wrap the catheter near the urethra, gently pull the catheter, so that the natural bend of the urethra can be smoothly pulled out.

5. After the catheter is removed, wipe the urethral secretions with gauze, and then disinfect the urethral outer opening with betadine to complete the catheter extraction operation.

There may be some discomfort after removal of the catheter. After removal of the catheter, you should drink more water until the urine is clear. If you are still unable to urinate, massage your abdomen clockwise or listen to the sound of water. If you are still unable to urinate on your own or feel unwell, consult a medical professional.
